Entry Qualifications

This is an exciting, entry level game design course suitable for you if you have installed PC applications and edited simple text files. The course will introduced you to 3D world design and shown you how to use them to create your own games. If you already have some experience with 3D game design you will find the course structure gives you the scope to go as far as your imagination will let you.

Software And Assets Provided

The professional grade game engine we use on the course is GameCore from Helios Interactive. We've chosen this engine as it can import a wide range of game assets and has an excellent object oriented scripting engine. The course includes our Interactive Framework, a very powerful set of scripts allowing interactive games to be created by simply setting object properties. This allows you to create highly interactive objects and game play without needing to learn a complicated programming language.

Also included in the course package are all the 3D Models you will need for the course adventure game including trees, houses, castles, creatures, characters, magic spells etc all complete with special effects and audio. The Game engine and all the assets are yours to keep and continue using at the end of the course.

Note: The game's 3D models and textures use industry standard formats so you're not locked into the software provided on the course. You can use them in other professional game design tools too.

The Game You Will Build

On the course you will be creating a first person fantasy adventure, involving landscapes, characters, magical creatures, and secret spells to discover and master. The techniques you will be shown can be used to create many different game themes, we've chosen this one as the magic element is great fun and allows you to be very creative. The course focuses on Adventure Games as this as a good entry level subject, the Game Engine itself is capable of creating a much wider range of games e.g. Match 3, Chess, Car Racing, Flight Simulation and more!

Your Personal Tutor

During the period of the course your personal tutor will be available to you in the online forum to help you and answer any questions you may have.

Taking Part

Each week for 12 weeks we send you an email showing you where to download the tutorials and game assets for that week. The list of downloads will always include all of the material from the previous weeks right back to the start of the course. So if you miss a week it's no problem, you can catch up in your own time. To get the most out of the course your are encouraged you to try and keep up so that you are at the same point as the rest of the students in our international forum, but it it's not essential. The course is structured to be very flexible so that you can approach it in one of two ways.
  • Simply follow our tutorials and create the game we provide for you
(about 4 to 6 hours per week)
  • Take the game components we provide and experiment ... add your own ideas!
(as many hours as you wish per week)

You Will Need

A reasonable PC or laptop is required with a minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768 with directX9 graphics interface support (most MS windows video cards provide this). We find that most newer PC's work ok but the better the spec the faster and smoother everything will be. You also need a reasonable internet connection as each weeks downloads will be around 50MBytes (split over several individual files).

After The Course

You will have the knowledge and software required to start building your own 3D computer games. By making full use of the student forum you may also have new like minded friends and contacts all over the world.
